Playford community celebrates Give the Gift of Reading!

Playford’s Give the Gift of Reading initiative has reached 831 book donations this year, building on last year’s 10,000-book milestone to AnglicareSA’s annual Christmas hampers.

Now in its fourteenth year, the initiative led by the City of Playford has helped thousands of books reach the homes of local families in time for Christmas.

Each year, AnglicareSA’s Christmas Hamper is delivered to residents to help to ease the pressure of Christmas.

Hampers contain food, toys and books for Playford’s refugee or foster families or others experiencing a range of vulnerabilities, including homelessness and low income.

Mayor Glenn Docherty officiated the handover of 831 books to AnglicareSA at Playford’s Civic Centre Library this week, bringing the overall donation tally to an astounding 10,965 books.

The initiative was established 14 years ago and has been embraced by the community to help promote reading among young people. Many residents jump at the opportunity to provide a special gift for families who require extra support throughout the festive season.

Mayor Glenn Docherty said the community’s continued support shows the strength and generosity of Playford.

“Each year, I am amazed by the number of books donated from our community,” Mayor Docherty said.

“It is wonderful to see our community come together to support families who need a little extra support at Christmas.”

He said Give the Gift of Reading has become an important tradition in Playford.

“For fourteen years, this initiative has encouraged a love of reading among young people while also offering something special to families experiencing hardship. The kindness shown by our residents makes a real difference and ensures these families feel supported during the festive season."
