- Time to nominate!
Behind every thriving community are people who give their time, skills and generosity – and the City of Playford is calling for nominations to honour these community champions through the 2026 Local Citizen Awards.
These awards celebrate individuals and groups who are dedicated to making a positive impact across Playford. From our volunteers, sporting leaders and all-round community helpers, the awards are an opportunity to highlight those whose selfless contributions enrich our growing community.
Mayor Glenn Docherty encourages residents to get involved by nominating someone who is inspiring or perhaps a community group who always shows up to support others.
“The Local Citizen Awards give us the chance to acknowledge the people who go above and beyond to strengthen our community. To be recognised on such an important day – Australia Day, is just so special,” Mayor Docherty said.
“These awards are about honouring the people who step forward to make Playford a better place. They might be your neighbour, a volunteer or someone you know who has dedicated their time to helping others.
“Every year, I am inspired by the incredible stories that we find through these nominations. It’s a reminder of the generosity, resilience and community spirit that truly exists in our City.”
Nominations are now open and close Friday, 14 November, and the award winners will be announced at the City of Playford Australia Day event in January.
The following six categories are open for nominations;
• Citizen of the Year
• Young Citizen of the Year (16 to 30 years)
• Community Group or Initiative of the Year
• Sports Club of the Year
• Award for Active Citizenship
• Award for Young Active Citizenship (16 to 30 years)
Playford’s 2025 Local Citizen Award winners included Citizen of the Year John Eoncheff and Young Citizen of Year Kaitlin Ownsworth.
Both recipients are known within our community through their exceptional leadership and working tirelessly to provide their support to good causes.
With over 50 years of service, John has responded to more than 3000 emergency calls, including house fires, grass fires and vehicle accidents.
However, it is his efforts behind the scenes, when the sirens fall silent, that truly highlights his dedication to his teammates and his beloved community.
Young Citizen of Year Kaitlin has dedicated herself to representing the Scouts at a variety of significant events across our City.
Her contributions include leading flag parades at Citizenship Ceremonies, raising the flag at our Australia Day event, and playing a key role in coordinating the ANZAC Day Vigil ceremonies held at Smithfield Memorial Gardens.
Each of these responsibilities highlights her commitment to honouring important community traditions and fostering a sense of respect.
