New homework support programs launch across Playford!

The City of Playford has introduced free homework support sessions to help local students with their studies.

These sessions will support students with valuable study skills, such as breaking down assignments into manageable tasks, building confidence, while encouraging focus and organisation.

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty is pleased to utilise our City’s facilities to provide local young people with the tools and support they need to succeed in their studies.

“We’re not just helping students with homework — these programs can help students reach their potential by providing extra support outside the classroom,” Mayor Docherty said.

“Sometimes all a student needs to succeed is a little extra time, guidance and encouragement — and that can make all the difference."

Multiple locations will hold homework sessions, with the John McVeity Centre holding sessions each Thursday throughout the school term from 3:30pm to 5:00pm in Function Room 3.

The program, which began this term, is designed to help children who may be struggling with a particular concept or topic, or who need assistance breaking down large projects.

Run by experienced educator of 25 years, Playford Children’s Program Officer Dawn Dyer, the sessions will also help support parents who find it difficult to support their children with current teaching methods, particularly in maths and science.

The program also provides a productive opportunity for children who have siblings participating in sport or other activities at JMC, allowing them to complete homework requirements before heading home.

The Uni Hub Playford will host fortnightly supervised homework sessions for Year 11 and 12 students, starting Thursday, 14 August.

The free sessions will run from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on 14 and 28 August, 11 and 25 September, 23 October and 6 November at the Uni Hub in the Civic Centre Library.

Playford’s Suburban University Study Hub Coordinator Christie Byrne believes these sessions will provide senior students with an alternative working space to complete assignments and other homework tasks.

“These homework sessions will provide senior students with a quiet and supportive study space to approach their important final assessment period,” Ms Byrne said.

“Uni Hub staff will also be available to answer questions about education and career pathways beyond high school.”
