- Celebrating a local hero and medal finalist
In the spirit of National Volunteer Week, held last week, the City of Playford is proud to congratulate Andrews Farm resident Lisa O’Malley, a 2025 finalist for the prestigious Joy Noble Medal.
Presented by Volunteering SA&NT, the medal recognises the outstanding contributions of volunteers across South Australia—those who give their time, heart and energy to support others.
Lisa’s volunteer journey spans more than 20 years, during which she and her family have opened their home to at least 80 children, caring for young people aged from just three weeks to 17 years. Many of them have stayed in touch to thank her for the lasting impact she made in their lives.
In addition to fostering, Lisa co-founded The Carer Project, a volunteer-run organisation offering support, education and advocacy for foster carers. The online group has grown to over 750 members, providing a vital support network for carers facing similar challenges.
Despite receiving well-deserved recognition, Lisa remains humble about her achievements.
“I just want to raise awareness and see more support for foster carers,” she said.
“Most are volunteers who can’t switch off—working weekends and public holidays with rare respite. All this can lead to losing friendships and becoming unattached to social life.”
Lisa’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Along with her Joy Noble Medal nomination, she is also a 2025 South Australian Local Hero nominee. In 2023, she was named Foster Carer of the Year and included in the Women’s Honour Roll.
City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty congratulated Lisa on her finalist medal and thanked her for her contribution to the community.
“There are so many people like Lisa quietly doing incredible work without seeking recognition — which is why it's so important to celebrate and acknowledge their contributions wherever we can.”
