- Minds and literacy grow at your local library
From toddlers to older adults, the City of Playford helps people build literacy skills and spark a lifelong love of reading through free programs across its libraries and community centres.
To mark International Literacy Day (8 September), Council is reminding families and residents to stay connected with their local library and to continue learning, growing and exploring new skills.
Mayor Glenn Docherty said Playford’s libraries play a role in giving young children the chance to engage with stories and books, helping to build their literacy levels as they approach school.
“We invite everyone to come along and make the most of these programs. By supporting literacy from the early years through to adulthood, we’re creating better outcomes not just for individuals, but for our community’s future,” Mayor Docherty said.
Programs such as Book Bugs, for children aged 0–2 years, use stories, music and play-based learning to nurture early literacy. Sessions are held on Mondays at the Civic Centre Library at 9:30 am and 10:30 am, and on Tuesdays at the Stretton Centre Library at 9:30 am and 10:30 am.
For children aged 2–5 years, Storytime combines stories, music and craft activities to make reading fun. These sessions run on Tuesdays at the Elizabeth Rise Community Centre at 9:30 am, Wednesdays at the Civic Centre Library at 10:30 am, and Fridays at the Stretton Centre Library at 10:30 am.
Tree Tots offers a nature-themed experience for children aged 2–5 years, helping them connect with the outdoors while developing literacy skills. This program is held on Thursdays at The Precinct at 10:30 am.
These early years programs run during school terms and no bookings are required. They also support the South Australian Government’s Words Grow Minds campaign, which highlights that 85 per cent of brain development occurs in the first three years of life. Simple daily interactions like reading, talking, singing and playing together can literally help grow children’s brains during this critical stage.
This year’s International Literacy Day theme, “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” points out that literacy today goes beyond reading and writing.
All Playford libraries and the Elizabeth Rise Community Centre offer free One-on-One Tech Help to assist residents to build their digital literacy skills. Morning sessions run throughout the week at different venues, with 30-minute bookings available by calling 8256 0333 or enquiring in person.
Whether you’re discovering stories for the first time, supporting your child’s early development, or building digital confidence, Playford’s libraries have something for everyone.
“They’re a base for anyone looking to learn, but most people are unaware of the sheer number of activities and services on offer,” the Mayor said.
