John McVeity Centre (JMC) – Under City of Playford management from 1 January 2021

The JMC at Smithfield is a Council-owned facility that plays an important role in the local community. It is a place that many people rely on to support their health and wellbeing and provides opportunities for people to come together and connect socially.

From 1 January 2021, Council will regain management of the JMC. This means we will not only own the centre, but run the programs and services from it too, much like we do at other community facilities like the Northern Sound System, Healthy Food Co and Elizabeth Rise Community Centre.

Why are we changing the management?

Our management agreement with current operators, YMCA, comes to an end on 31 December 2020. We’ve taken this opportunity to rethink how things are run at JMC and how we can bring extra value to the community. We are excited by the chance to work with nearby services and other groups to increase JMC’s service options with new social and wellbeing programs.

What does the change of management mean for you?

The JMC is not closing down. The absolute majority of programs and services will continue ‘business as usual’.

JMC hirers and user groups

Regular hirers and user groups will be contacted directly to discuss continuing their existing arrangements. You won’t be asked to leave or cease operating from the JMC.

Court sport competitions

Court sport competitions including basketball, netball and futsal will recommence in early 2021 following the usual Christmas/New Year break.

Function room users

Function rooms will continue to be available for the community to hire for events and functions.

Group fitness

We are pleased to announce our Aquadome partner, BlueFit will deliver the group fitness program and child minding service from 11 January 2021.

Group fitness classes will continue with ‘pay as you go’ options to allow more flexibility for users.

BlueFit specialise in delivering world class programming and services with their philosophy being ‘Inspiring Community Activity’.

We look forward to strengthening our partnership and delivering positive outcomes for the Playford community.

There will no longer be a membership based gym service at the JMC from close of business 30 December 2020. While the gym will close, there will still be a range of group fitness activities offered at the facility with new health and wellbeing programs to be introduced in 2021.

Detailed information for gym members

No action is required by members; all memberships will automatically cease end of day 30 December 2020.

Payment and refund arrangements

For direct debit members, the last debit will be on 17 December 2020, which will permit access up to and including 30 December. Members are welcome to request cancellation prior adhering to standard membership terms (two weeks written notice).

For upfront (contract) members and visit pass holders, any remaining value (pro-rata) will be refunded to you. The YMCA will provide these members with instructions on how to submit banking details for the refund, which will be processed in the first two weeks of 2021.

JMC Members offer – Join the Aquadome

Members have the option of joining the Aquadome gym. All current JMC gym members are offered:

Thank you to YMCA

Council sincerely thanks the YMCA and its staff for their positive contribution in managing the centre. They have played a big part in the JMC’s history and formed close connections with the local community. We will continue to work with the YMCA during the handover to ensure a smooth transition.
