City of Playford’s award-winning initiative, Give the Gift of Reading, continues to spread the joy of reading at Christmas to disadvantaged South Australian families across the state and in the Playford Community. Now in its fifth year, GTGoR has helped raise 3,474 books for disadvantaged families in the Playford Community alone. Get involved! Buy a new book for a child, teen or adult and drop it off at the Playford Libraries OR Elizabeth Rise Community Centre with the GTGoR tag attached (available on the Christmas trees at drop-off locations). Make sure you write your name and contact details on the Christmas tags, as you will be in the chance to WIN a $100 Coles-Myer Voucher.
Daina Pocius, Heritage Coordinator and the creator of the long-standing event, stated that this year the library hopes to reach the goal of 5,000 books donated over the past five years. “This year the Playford Library is aiming to reach 5,000 books since the initiative started in 2012… this means our goal for 2017 is just over 1,500 books” she said. Last year the Library beat all previous years will a whopping 1,109 books donated, making this year’s goal to reach 5,000 books donated very achievable.
On Tuesday 19 December the Give the Gift of Reading Christmas Party will see the books donated to Anglicare SA, who will distribute them to disadvantaged families just in time for Christmas. Reading regularly to small children has been shown to have a positive effect on the development and numeracy skills.
