- Science takes the big screen in Playford
The Shedley Theatre will host two special screenings on Thursday 20 August, beginning with A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough at 2:15 pm.
The documentary follows the remarkable story of a baby silverback gorilla named Pahlo who Sir David Attenborough encountered in the 1970s and takes the audience on a journey of how Pablo’s descendants are living in the Rwandan mountains today.
Families can then return to see The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part at 6:15 pm.
Complimentary snacks and drinks will be available on arrival while stocks last.
The screenings are open to all ages, with free registrations required through Eventbrite.
Mayor Glenn Docherty said that Council is proud to support National Science Week bringing free opportunities to explore, create and learn close to home.
“Science on Screen offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a free movie experience with family or spend a day out with friends in the central location of the Playford Civic Centre,” Mayor Docherty said.
“Playford’s jobs in advanced manufacturing, logistic, defence and health care continue to grow, so knowledge in science, technology and innovation will play an increasingly important role in our city’s economic future.
“It is vital that we introduce young people to the possibilities of STEM and encourage pathways into further study and future careers.
“That is why Council venues, including our library and Northern Sound System, are also embracing National Science Week with activities designed to inspire creativity, curiosity and problem-solving.”
Northern Sound System will host a Women in STEM experience on Monday 17 August, featuring workshops and hands-on activities led by female leaders and role models from STEM industries.
The event will include representatives from South Australia Police, Adelaide Zoo, education providers and other organisations.
Before the evening movie session on Thursday 20 August, attendees can also drop into the Great Hall at the Playford Civic Centre for a free science-themed paper craft activity from 4 pm.
