Panama to train in Playford
Published 24 March 2023
The City of Playford will play host to the Panama Women’s National Football team this July as part of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

City of Playford is proud to announce that it has been selected to provide a team base camp for the Panama Women’s National Football team as part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July 2023.

The Central American nation will utilise the Playford Sports Precinct at Ridley Reserve for their tournament training and preparations. The team is expected to arrive in early July ahead of their first World Cup Match which will be held at Hindmarsh Stadium on 24 July.

City of Playford has spent the last 18 months working with the Adelaide United Football Club through the application and selection process with FIFA to attract a participating country to the Playford Sports Precinct.

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said that while this presents an opportunity to showcase the Playford Sports Precinct, it importantly provides a chance for local and South Australian soccer fans to get involved in this popular and growing sport.

“We are proud of our strong sporting culture in Playford,” said Mayor Docherty. “We know many residents will be excited to have world-class athletes based in Playford for the World Cup.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is the most significant women’s sport event in the world this year and the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere.

“City of Playford is honoured to share one of our best sporting facilities with the Panama team as part of our ongoing commitment to providing sporting opportunities and attracting visitors to our city,” he said.

Plans are currently underway with Football South Australia and Adelaide United to encourage community involvement and celebrations in welcoming our new visitors. This will also include the continuation of the inter-school soccer competition for high school girls hosted at Ridley Reserve.

More information on how the community can get involved with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will be provided over coming months.
