Next section of Gawler Greenway in Playford now complete
Published 22 December 2023
The City of Playford has finalised construction of a new asphalt path from Elizabeth South Railway Station to Whitford Road, along the Gawler railway line as part of the Gawler Greenway project.

The 3.5-metre-wide off-road shared use path completes the connection from Elizabeth South Station to the Elizabeth Railway Station and Elizabeth CBD and is part of the State Government’s long-term vision to create a shared use path from Adelaide to Gawler.

Solar lights have been installed along the new path extending the time the path can be used and benches have also been installed providing an area for members of the public to rest along their travels and spend longer in the fresh air.

When fully complete, the Gawler Greenway will include dedicated shared pedestrian and cycle pathways, signalised pedestrian crossings across key arterial roads and connections with suburban streets.

Mayor Glenn Docherty said that the Gawler Greenway project is identified in Council’s Cycling and Walking Strategy as improving walking and cycling passageways for the community and providing connectivity across the city.

“Gawler Greenway provides opportunities for cycling and walking mode share, providing a safe and direct route to get active outdoors and improves accessibility to public transport.”

“The route also improves connectivity to key destinations such as the Elizabeth CBD, schools, open space and the many other great facilities within Playford. We know ease of getting around the city is important to Playford residents,” said Mayor Glenn Docherty.

State Member for Elizabeth, Lee Odenwalder MP said that the project is a win-win for the local area.

"It is a great example of State Government partnering with Council for the benefit of our local community,” said Mr Odenwalder.

“It will mean improved access to public transport and better connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians with the Elizabeth CBD, with schools and with entertainment precincts. It’s good for our health and it’s good for local business."

Further background

The Gawler Greenway is a long-term vision of the State Government to create a shared use path that extends from the Adelaide to Gawler.

Greenways are dedicated walking and cycling routes following public transport corridors or linear open space, such as along rivers. Greenway routes typically connect quiet local streets with new off-street paths and main road crossings, creating direct cycling routes and better access to public transport stops and stations.

This stage of the project was jointly funded by the City of Playford and the Department of Infrastructure and Transport at a project cost of approximately $400k.

The first stage was completed in 2021 when the path adjacent to the Gawler Railway line from Elizabeth Railway Station to Whitford Road was constructed. This stage also included the installation of solar lights.

This recent work builds on the first stage and has seen the construction of a pathway from Elizabeth South Railway Station to Whitford Road.
