We are looking to redistribute our current library opening hours on Sundays at Stretton and Civic Centre Libraries - and you are invited to have your say!

Council is proposing that on Sundays to close Stretton Centre Library and open the Civic Centre Library instead (find our current and proposed hours in the FAQs below).

We are focused on growing visitation, broadening the programming and continuing to be a place of learning and access for the community. Presently, the Stretton Centre Library attracts 124,000 visits every year and is open across seven days. On the other hand, our Civic Centre Library is growing in attendance and has attracted 220,000 visits in 2018/19 with only six opening days per week.

To support this renewed growth and focus on new projects underway in the Playford CBD, we intend to seek your feedback on the proposed redistribution of Stretton Centre Library and Civic Centre Library Sunday opening hours.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the review, with more available on the Library Hours Review consultation page.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the proposed changes?

The proposed changes are to redistribute the Sunday opening hours from Stretton Centre Library to the Civic Centre Library. This will make the Civic Centre Library a seven day a week library and the Stretton Centre Library a six day a week library. Further details on the current at proposed hours are below:

Will you be reducing or increasing the libraries' opening hours?

No, the library hours are just being redistributed from the Stretton Centre Library to the Civic Centre Library.

Is this coming at an additional cost to Council and ratepayers?

The change in location hours will come at no service level change and no additional cost to Council. The change will allow the branch visitation to continue to grow and increase community value.

If library hours change, when will they be introduced?

The intended change, if the proposal is accepted, is to commence from October 2019.

Will this impact library staff?

No, this will not impact any staff members at the library.

Can I still return my library items to Stretton Centre Library on Sundays?

Yes, there is a returns chute located on the Peachey Road side of the building, available to the public 24/7.

Are there any other benefits to opening Playford Civic Centre Library?

Yes, some of these are listed below.

  • Parking: the opening of the Windsor Car Park in the CBD has created additional opportunities for ease of car parking of visitors for the Civic Centre Library. The first three hours in the car park are free, it has adequate lighting, wide spaces and is a secure place to park. Compared to parking at our Stretton Centre Library, weekend visitation of the highly frequented Playford Alive Town Park can make close parking difficult for library customers
  • Computer access: the Civic Centre Library is a much larger space for children and youth, and has a much higher number of publicly available computers for use on Sundays. Wi-Fi is also available
What is the consultation period for the library hours review?

Community consultation on this proposal will open from 5 August to 5pm 26 August 2019.
