Celebrate Australia Day 2021
Published 18 January 2021
The biggest barbecue breakfast in Playford this Australia Day is back with a new home.

In 2021, the City of Playford’s Australia Day festivities are moving to X Convenience Oval, Elizabeth - home of the Central Districts Football Club.

Mayor Glenn Docherty says the City of Playford is excited to bring the event to the community in 2021, and you can still expect some of your favorite Australia Day activities.

“As always attendees will enjoy a free barbecue breakfast thanks to our service groups, along with free rides and an incredible line up of popular entertainers who represent our diverse community performing throughout the day,” Mayor Docherty said.

“This year we are embracing our sporting culture with an opportunity for community to have a go at netball, tennis and of course Australian rules football.”

Once again popular South Australian icon, Andrew “Cosi” Costello, will host this year’s celebrations. He will be joined on stage by Playford’s Australia Day Ambassador, Dr Bill Griggs AM ASM, who will assist Mayor Glenn Docherty in the presentation of our Australia Day Awards.

Dr Griggs is known for his work as a world-renowned authority and expert in trauma medicine and is the inventor of the ‘Griggs Kit’, an artificial airway known world-wide and contributing to the saving of many lives.

“Our Australia Day festivities will celebrate our people, and multicultural values featuring local entertainment and our Australia Day Awards which recognises some of our City’s local heroes” said Mayor Docherty.

“An important part of our Australia Day celebrations each year is our Australian citizenship ceremony. This year we will be welcoming 80 new Australian citizens who now call Playford home.”

There will be plenty of fun for the whole family to enjoy with acts including Mr Oopy, Bumbles the Clown, Phap Hoa Lion Dance, Playford City Concert Band, Mudra Dance Academy, and more.

The City of Playford has measures in place to ensure the event is as safe as possible, with bookings essential, all tickets scanned on arrival and attendees required to COVID SAfe Check-In.

“We have worked closely with SA Health to make sure everyone has fun while staying safe at our Australia Day festivities,” said Mayor Docherty.

“It’s important to us that you enjoy the event, however these measures will only work if everyone plays their part in keeping each other safe – so please follow our COVIDSafe practices.”

This event is being held in accordance with SA Health directions and has an approved COVID Management Plan in place. COVID Marshalls will be in attendance.

The Playford Australia Day festivities are supported by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.

Come join the festivities at X Convenience Oval, Elizabeth – Tuesday, 26 January 2021 from 8am to 12noon, gates open from 7:30am.
