The green is under construction and more like a brown, but Playford Bowling Club members are happy with ongoing progress at their new home.

The lawn bowls facility, being built at Goodman Road, Elizabeth, will be the largest undercover lawn bowls arena in Australia when it opens in March.

Club members toured the construction site this week for their first look at the new facility, which forms part of the City of Playford’s Sports Precinct project.

After the visit, club president Jim Main said he was excited about the possibilities the new facility will provide.

“There’s nowhere in Australia that will match up with the complex here,” Mr Main said. “What we have here is a showpiece for bowls.”

The new facility follows the merger of the Elizabeth and Munno Para bowling clubs and has been financed by the sale of land at Munno Para, which has purchased by an investor for commercial development.

As the clubrooms near lock-up stage, work will commence on installing the synthetic greens.

The base piers for the large all-weather shade structure (over 5000 square metres) are currently being installed, ready for the roof structure’s erection next month.

“When I see what’s happening here, it’s absolutely magnificent and makes me so proud,” Mr Main said.

The next time members enter the club’s grounds they will be attending the arena’s handover and will be more than ready for a roll.
