Edinburgh North Business Forum

Aims of the Forum

The Edinburgh North Business Forum has been established to form strategic alliances with regional stakeholders in order to build on current educational, social and economic initiatives to upgrade the precinct and the surrounding environs.

The Forum will drive industrial renewal, which is integral to the revitalisation of Playford and the development of a Northern CBD at Elizabeth Regional Centre.  To build this vision requires global investment and local industry collaborating with the Commonwealth, State and Local Governments.

Name change for world market

One of the first initiatives for the Forum was to raise the profile of businesses in the precinct nationally and internationally by seeking a name change from 'Elizabeth West' to 'Edinburgh North' reflecting the close relationship to the Edinburgh Air Base which has international recognition. Areas surrounding Elizabeth West are reflected by the use of the name Edinburgh and already have global market status.

The suburb 'Edinburgh North' was approved by the Surveyor General and gazetted by the State Government on 27 October 2011, the new Edinburgh North suburb will comprise the whole of Elizabeth West and a portion of Penfield.

Already headquarters for over 100 businesses, Edinburgh North is positioning itself as an eco industrial centre for the state and leader in environmental sustainability, and contains a number of flagship companies including:

  • Weeks Group – manufacturer of Supaloc, the world’s best light gauge steel framing system and one of the largest residential builders in South Australia
  • Priority Engineering Services – one of South Australia’s leading research and development and advanced manufacturing companies undertaking mining, defence and aerospace contracts
  • Exide Batteries – one of the largest automotive battery manufacturers in the Australian market
  • Hiroctec – one of the world’s most technologically advanced automotive stamping plants
  • Scholle Industries – Australia’s leading plastics manufacturers and major research and development company
  • Avery Dennison - Recognised as an industry leader that develops innovative labelling solutions for businesses and consumers worldwide.

Background

The Edinburgh North Business Forum was established in 2009 to lift the national and international profile and improve the competitiveness of the Edinburgh North precinct.

Located north of the RAAF base, in the vicinity of Stebonheath, Bellchambers and Womma Roads, Edinburgh North Precinct consists of a number of advanced manufacturing businesses.

Since its inception, the Business Forum has adopted a 10 point business plan for growth that includes development of the Edinburgh North Master Plan and Marketing Strategy to differentiate itself from other industrial estates in Northern Adelaide.

Edinburgh North Master Plan

The Master Plan promotes new industrial development and potential environmental and sustainable urban design practices to attract new businesses to the precinct. It also focusses on improving the aesthetics of the area and implementing environmental initiatives that will reduce energy use and make the business precinct more sustainable.

Plans have been developed to upgrade Stebonheath Road infrastructure so it can be a major transport link to the adjacent Greater Edinburgh Parks Defence Precinct.

Future successful outcomes also include pedestrian and bicycle connections from Edinburgh North Precinct to Elizabeth Station.

Urban design guidelines have also been developed that can also be applied to other industrial areas to establish Edinburgh North as a leading force in precinct development, to attract future project funding from state and local governments to the region.
