Sports and Recreation

The City of Playford provides over 200 sporting facilities for the Playford community.

One of our major sporting facilities is home to the South Australian National Football League 2000 Grand Final winners - the Central District Football Club. We are very pleased that, in the year 2000, the Central District Football team brought home the cup for the first time after being in the league since 1964. Amazingly, the Centrals have gone on to win the SANFL Premiership flag eight more times with their latest victory in 2010.

Future Sports and Recreation Needs

Playford Council works closely with local sports groups and recreation providers to determine the future provision and management of recreation and sports opportunities within the City.

There are numerous sports and recreation facilities throughout the City and a review was required to ensure the resources provided to these facilities were offering the right mix of sports and recreation services sought by local residents.

Three key areas within the Sports and Recreation Plan include:

  • Sporting facilities, eg sports fields and sporting amenities (eg clubrooms, change rooms)
  • Informal recreation facilities, eg walking and cycle paths, playgrounds, picnic areas
  • Recreation and sports development programs.

The Sports and Recreation Plan covers a five year timeframe and addresses issues identified during the consultation with sports and recreation groups.

Some of the main issues identified were:

  • The development of Sporting Hubs to assist in addressing the financial hardship clubs are facing and encourage increased sharing of resources and venues among clubs. This may lead to multiple clubs using upgraded facilities.
  • Surveys have shown that residents are seeking increased youth facilities and programs. We already have the funding for a skate park but need to increase the range of youth recreation programs offered to young people.
  • Trends indicate that the community is seeking opportunities to participate more in informal activities particularly with family and friends. The provision of additional family orientated facilities incorporating picnic and play areas is under review.
  • Council receives many enquiries from residents about walking and cycling trails. A series of linked trails which encourage increased participation in cycling and walking is sought.
  • With clubs facing increased administrative and compliance issues, Council, the community, peak sporting bodies and the State Government must work together to provide support for clubs to ensure their club's are running in a business-like manner. Auditing and public scrutiny of club's continues to increase and support must be provided to clubs to ensure they remain viable.
