There are many things that affect our health, with two very important factors including what we eat (diet/nutrition), and how physically active we are.
When we talk about "diet" we are not referring to a short term fad involving strange or extreme eating behaviours. Diet refers to anything you eat - your everyday food and drink habits. We want to make healthy eating a part of everyone's day-to-day habits.
Being aware of what we eat is important because our food plays a role in keeping us healthy. Food is essential to life, providing a vehicle for energy and nutrients. Eating the right types of foods in the right amounts is important for health.
We can't always stop ourselves from getting sick but from eating healthy food, drinking plenty of water, and being physically active, we are more likely to live a long and healthy life. Sometimes it's hard to know why we need to eat well and keep active as we don't always see immediate the benefits; but it's about prevention. Looking after ourselves and being healthy now, helps us stay healthy for longer, with more energy and life to spend with our friends and family.
Being overweight, physically inactive and not eating enough fruit and vegetables are the main risk factors for developing a chronic disease such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. The good news is that these unhealthy behaviours can be avoided.
