The City of Playford is home to some of the nation's leading manufacturing and high technology companies including Holden, Priority Engineering, Scholle Industries and Exide Batteries. The northern Adelaide region accounts for around 70% of South Australia's manufacturing output with South Australia leading the nation's manufacturing export growth.
Holden manufacturing plant is located in the heart of the City of Playford providing significant employment to the northern Adelaide community. The Elizabeth manufacturing facility is the main focus for the production of 42 vehicle models for the domestic and export market. The recent introduction of the Holden Cruze has provided a boost to the local economy and continues to contribute significant outcomes for the northern region.
Pioneers of the Bag-In-Box packaging, Scholle is leading the way in packaging for the food, beverage and industrial market with products being located in over 60 countries worldwide. As a key contributor to research and development, Scholle is at the forefront of innovation of flexible packaging technology.
The City of Playford is also well known for its contribution to the horticultural industry. Over 60 products are grown in the Virginia area, on the western side of our City. Major products include fresh vegetables, flowers and wine and provide a gross value of $79 million per year.
The Virginia Horticulture Centre is the nucleus for the expansion of the horticulture industry. The Centre's role is to increase export to overseas markets, enable co-operation and co-ordination between growers, and promote research and development of new techniques.
