OPAL

What is OPAL?

OPAL is a healthy lifestyle initiative that aims to improve the eating and activity patterns of children through working with families and the whole community, and thereby increasing the proportion of 0 - 18 year olds in the Playford community in a healthy weight range. OPAL will make a genuine difference to the health of individuals and communities by becoming part of community life and will create opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating to ensure sustainability.

The OPAL initiative in the City of Playford is building on the European success story (EPODE) and will work with a range of people in the community to positively change attitudes and behaviours about healthy eating and physical activity. OPAL has a whole of community approach and therefore work across a number of settings including; non-government agencies, schools, kindergartens, childcare, health services, community service providers, libraries, sports and recreation facilities, local supermarkets and of course with council!

Previously, OPAL has worked across two catchment areas (north and south) within the City of Playford. In mid September 2014 the OPAL north initiative ended, with the OPAL South initiative continuing until mid 2016. Catchment suburbs for the southern area include: Elizabeth, Elizabeth South, Elizabeth Grove, Elizabeth Vale, Elizabeth Downs, Elizabeth East, Elizabeth Park and Hillbank.

Every twelve months there will be a new OPAL theme with a specific health message. The City of Playford will provide tools to help schools, sports and recreation clubs, health services, government agencies and private enterprise to get involved and develop activities around the theme.

OPAL is supported by Mayor Glenn Docherty, the City of Playford Council and the State Government.
