$11.3m grant for Suburban Jobs Program in Playford

A new learning, employment and research centre will be established in the City of Playford to boost local employment opportunities.

The Australian Government announced $11.3 million for the project today, with another $4 million cash and in-kind support to be provided by the University of Adelaide and the Urban Renewal Authority.

Named after one of Australia’s leading public intellectuals, Professor Hugh Stretton, the Stretton Centre will showcase innovative approaches to workforce development and provide employment opportunities for people living in and around the City of Playford.

The $15.3 million Stretton Centre is a partnership between the City of Playford, the University of Adelaide and the Urban Renewal Authority.

Situated adjacent to the Curtis Road Town Centre, currently under development as part of the Playford Alive urban regeneration development, the Stretton Centre will undertake innovative research, evaluation and engagement programs to maximise job opportunities in the area.

City of Playford Mayor, Glenn Docherty says that the Stretton Centre will be a great boost to the area, and provide opportunities for local people to gain education and employment in Playford.

"The Stretton Centre is a fabulous opportunity for the City of Playford, and will really move the region forward in the creation of local jobs for local people.

"This is a once in a generation chance to focus on our local region, and enable a learning to employment strategy that is specific to Playford, and we thank the Australian Government for their support.

"We are the fastest growing Council in South Australia, and the City of Playford has been identified in strategic planning for the state, as a key centre for Adelaide’s urban and economic growth for the next generation.

"So we want to capture the benefits of our growth along with the growth in manufacturing, mining, defence, health and aged care sectors and digital economy, north of Adelaide.

"Currently a third of our working residents leave the area for work, so we also want to create local jobs for local people, so they can live, learn and work here.

"The City of Playford is committed to this project and we welcome the opportunity to further establish a working relationship with the University of Adelaide and the State and Australian Governments and the other Councils who have received similar funding."

The City of Playford is one of three Councils in Australia to receive funding as part of the $45 million Suburban Jobs Program.
